International Dawah Movement

History

The ISLAMIC DAWAH MOVEMENT TVL PTA made its humble beginning from a shop in Boom Street Pretoria in the mid 70's, with the assistance of a few concerned voluntary Islamic Workers — May Allah Grant them & their progeny the best in both worlds. At a National Da'wah Coordinating meeting in Tongaat, it was decided to set up centres throughout the country. In response to that, in 1982, with the kind assistance of Pretoria Islamic Society, premises were made available & a full-time Da'ee was employed, in time for operations: Winter Warmth & Qurbani, to be implemented by the grace & mercy of Allah Azzawajal.1983/84 the committee was expanded: comprising Anver M Ayob, Siky Mohamed, A K Ebrahim, A K Kurtha, Haroon Tar Muhammad, Riaz Ahmed Cassim, & Farhad Kana, with Abdullah Ghany Mokoena, who was also accommodated on the premises. Then Zozo houses were erected to accommodate newcomers to the field, for in-house, resident crash courses on the basics of Islam. Alhamdulillah, many tasks fulfilled over the years. Fundraising, however, has always been a problem.Da'wah Network Youth Camp: a highlight for the '90s was the beginning of Da'wah Network in the then PWV Area to assist in effective Da'wah. This culminated in a youth camp at the Mamelodi Islamic Centre over the December long weekend, where the youth of various townships were involved in training & education of reverts to Islam. Future youth camps in the various townships will greatly improve the quality of Islam among people. The major limiting factor is not the will of the Da'wah workers, but Financial Resources! In 1998, due to major renovations at the Pretoria Islamic Society ('P I S') Musjid in Marabastad, our Da'wah Centre had to move a block away to the Professional Block temporarily, being promised bigger premises on completion of the renovations to the Musjid. Much transpired in the ensuing years, also resulting in the 'temporary' closure of the Dormitory housing the students. 'P I S' was unfortunately unable to provide the space promised to IDM on initially moving out from the Mosque site — mysteriously flouted!Another milestone was the establishment of the Islamic Centre at Mabopane. It's only through the grace of Almighty Allah, the untiring efforts of Abdullah Ghany & the financial backing of Pretoria Muslim Congregation, that this project was accomplished. It is the intention of IDMpta to assist in this very important field, as an 'Islamic Centre' is the cornerstone to establishing Islamic Communities in townships, for the pleasure of Allah Azzawajal.Members attended a function at the 'Peanut Club' in Carmine Street, Laudium, where Da'wah in Laudium was discussed & Br Mohamed Husain Kana offered the Peanut Club site to IDMpta. May Allah reward all of us both by intention & fulfilment. Aameen.Da’wah Training: Abdullah Ghany & Adam Mohamed attended the Management Skills Workshop by leading scholar Dr Omar Kasule of "IIFSO" (Int. Is. Fed. of Student Org).Hospital Visits: the Military Hospital at Voortrekkerhoogte was visited to assist the Muslims & tried arranging for them to attend classes at our Centre. Literature, an important feature of Da'wah, was freely distributed among the people at the site.Thirteen years had passed on the first floor of the constricted Maraba Centre. Fortunately, most of the rentals were sponsored. Due to excessive crime at the Maraba Centre (part of which building was subsequently condemned after a fire) our office moved to Fatima Centre in Laudium, kindly sponsored by Brother Anver Suliman (DK) & partners. Once again, may Allah reward all.We accommodated the stranded Madressa Taqwa students at our newly acquired premises for a short while, until ownership of Fatima Centre changed, which is when, once again, we had to move offices.Br Shaheen Carrim came to our rescue by accommodating our offices in his building at 491 Navy Street in 'White Blocks', Laudium.16/07/1999 — Da’wah Program organized at Queen Street Mosque (Town Mosque), where Sunnyside Primary School students & teachers (non-Muslims) were invited to hear from Abdullah Ghany Mokoena about revelations to the various Prophets. Moulana Sayed Muhammud spoke on Christianity & Islam. Good turn-out and literature distributed!22/07/1999 — Da'wah program at a venue in Motla Village, Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, accommodating approximately 150 people. It was a very successful function; lectures were given & lots of literature also distributed.2/03/2000 — Attended the Cultural Fete organized by the Muslim Students Association at Medunsa Medical University of South Africa. A fun-filled day at their sports field, where we occupied one of the tables, spread with Islamic literature. Many enquiries received & answered fruitfully! Received a letter of gratitude from student leader Br Ridwan I Omar. Attendance of approximately 800 people. Alhumdullillah!Year 2000 saw the moving to Erasmia of our brother Abdul Kadder Kurtha, who hasn't sat back, but had taken on another challenging task of running the affairs at Abubaker Sidique Musjid nearby. This was thought to be a loss to IDM Pretoria — we missed his invaluable input. But Alhamdulillah, his valuable input still reaches us via the pulpit at ABS & on occasion working together on some small projects etc. May Allah bless him & his family in both worlds.Sunday 21/05/2000 — we hosted world-renowned scholar Dr Zakir Naik to speak on Islam, Christianity & Hinduism at the Alankar Cinema Hall. A mixed audience of all faiths fully occupied every seat. The talks were followed by a very interesting & thought-provoking question & answer session.20/09/2002 — we hosted a successful Da'wah program at the Military Base in Voortrekkerhoogte, on the invitation of Sergeant LR Bapela, on their Ubuntu Cultural Awareness Day. Abdullah Ghany talked on 'The Value System of Islam'.13/10/2002 — Mr Gerard Jooste of the Primary School, who was quite impressed by the relevant suggestions that Br Abdullah recommended in response to some problem-solving matters at a political meeting they often met at, requested an informal meeting of their learners at a Mosque in Pretoria. At that venue, Dr Anver Suliman, Sikander Mohamed & Br Salim Ahmed led the proceedings for just under 2 hours, which included a tour of the Mosque precinct.Up to mid-2013, IDMpta was under the wing of the National Body based in KZN — funding from Pretoria went to the Head Office in KZN. After the deterioration of Dr Dada's health, having just undergone heart surgery, he indicated that the Pretoria office should fend for itself, and that the Durban office would no longer carry the expenses (which, in any case, was borne by collections to Durban FROM Pretoria!). Officially separated from the KZN Branch, IDM of SA.FNB savings accounts were opened, to avoid excessive bank charges, for IDMTG: 13/07/2013 — Lillah a/c 62481072636; 2014 — Zakaat a/c 62421158199.14/12/2014 — Solsons Property Investments (Pty) Ltd. acquired new, spacious premises, sponsored by Br. Yusuf Suliman Bhidia for the Esale Sawaab of his late father Hajee Suliman Hajee Moosa. May Allah (SWT) let Solly bha's soul rest in peace & grant him Janatul Firdous. May Allah (SWT) grant his family good health, happiness & pious offspring, with the best in both worlds.20/05/2015 — New Office Launch, for awareness of the new IDMPta Centre, was held at the Laudium Civic Centre. In spite of load-shedding, about five hundred people attended the enlightening function. Qari Binyameen of Pakistan rendered the opening Qiraat & Br. Mohamed the Naths. Various speakers gave short, inspiring talks on living Islam practically and 'passing on' the message, as being the most important function of a Muslim. H T Mohamed, Zubair, Noor, Ameen & Siky organized the catering; sound, filming & recording was handled by Feizal Jalalpor. A business leader among the Somali Community in Pretoria West showed much interest in wanting to assist with the Da'wah for Pretoria West. May Allah reward all with the best in both worlds.October 2015 — renovations & repairs at the Itireleng Township Office, Ml Suliman: desks and doors repaired, welded steel pipes for labour, plus upholstery & stationery supplied.January 2016 — opening of an afternoon Madressa to assist the Muslim Jamaat, currently having thirty learners, at Erasmus Hebron, district Pretoria North.29/05/2016 — Julsa Day. Provisions for food prepared with the assistance of local business Kismet Store & certain individuals. The occasion was a great success, Alhumdullillah! Abdullah, Habiba & members of the management committee attended. 'What Isra/Mi'raj is all about!' — our May 2016 Laudium Sun advert depicted the events leading to the Ascension of our beloved Prophet on the Night Journey to the seventh Heaven, when he was given this wonderful gift: the five daily prayers for the Ummah.2016 also saw the establishment of the Da'wah Office in the Mosque courtyard at Itireleng Squatter Camp, manned by Ishmail Sumaila. 19/06/2016 — Christoffel Street Da'wah proposition, with Somalian community leader involvement.During February 2017, we continued the Skills Development Program with space kindly provided by Ismail (Miley) Sikander Bawa, also in Itireleng but a more suitable space — computers & office furniture were sponsored. Ishmael Sumaila manned the project for a short period in the squatter camp then went on to pursue other career plans. June 2017 — began preparations for Ramadaan at the branches; future plan: Qurbani!1/12/2017 — decided to open an account at Al Baraka in the new year, for ease of banking & security. 20/03/2018 — we opened a bank account at Al Baraka Bank under the name Moral Development Foundation, also hoping to save on high FNB bank charges. NPO # applied for. NPC 2015/182671/08. PBO: 9300 6175.10/11/2018 — six persons from the Masemola family embraced Islam at 1610 Masango stand, Winterveld. September 2018 — Mayfair Da’wah office established, with Ramadan Mukwashi in attendance.2018 — Da'wah literature & Islamic info-cards printed for distribution at various schools, universities, hospitals & other venues & gatherings where talks were given. 8/03/2019 — placed a colour advert in the Laudium Sun (1/8th page) on 'The Shining Prophets of Islam'.3/07/19 — a special meeting regarding a name-change request by Dr Dada was refuted, as the members considered it unreasonable, and it would be discussed at a later meeting. Quotes were to be sought for the installation of a borehole at Hebron Islamic Centre. Then (Covid-19…)5/08/2019 — for the outreach program at Kwagga Centre, Misubah had the good fortune of speaking to approximately forty people on 'the pillars of Islam' & also invited them to the office in Laudium for sharing further information over tea.December 2019 — Sikander to sponsor land for development of an Islamic Centre. Lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic — worldwide panic causes shutdown.January 2020 — acquired an additional hall adjoining our premises at Mishka Centre, hoping to resume classes & establish a Halaqaat, plus hold regular local domestic-worker workshops. Lockdown hampered activities from March 2020 — erratic attendance year-round! Shutdown 15/12/2020. 2021 — office opened only at the beginning of March, with one staff member, Mustapha.Had it not been for the above sponsored rentals, it would have been difficult to survive, as fundraising has been the most difficult of our tasks — and still is, as aging Br Anver's mobility is now curbed. The shutdown too has affected the world economy. Nevertheless, Da'wah has to carry on! We need to invite new blood to take the organisational Da'wah efforts to a higher level, InshaAllah! APPEAL: for greater impetus to the Da'wah effort, your FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION is humbly requested. We pray your contribution be accepted by Almighty Allah in His cause, and that Allah (SWT) grants us all forgiveness, & the best in both worlds. InshaAllah! May Allah Azzawajal accept all our sincere good dua's.
